The Ghana Association of Female Agricultural and Fish Farmers Award Winners (GAFAFAW)

The Ghana Association of Female Agricultural and Fish Farmers Award Winners (GAFAFAW) is the premier national organization representing women who have distinguished themselves through excellence in agriculture and fisheries and have been recognized through Ghana's National Farmers' Day Awards Scheme. The association was established with the vision of creating a unified platform where outstanding female farmers and fish farmers could collectively champion agricultural development, women empowerment, policy advocacy, knowledge sharing, mentorship, and national food security.

Although women constitute a significant proportion of Ghana's agricultural labour force and contribute immensely to food production, livestock, fisheries, agribusiness, and value addition, many continue to face structural barriers including limited access to land, finance, agricultural technology, extension services, markets, and decision-making opportunities. These persistent challenges inspired a group of award-winning female farmers from across the sixteen regions of Ghana to organize themselves into one national body that would speak with a stronger and united voice.

The association was founded by twenty (20) distinguished female National, Regional and District Best Farmers and Fish Farmers, representing all regions of Ghana. Their objective was not merely to celebrate past achievements but to transform their individual successes into a collective movement capable of influencing agricultural policy, promoting innovation, and inspiring more women and young girls to venture into commercial agriculture. From its inception, GAFAFAW positioned itself as more than an association of award recipients. Rather, it became a professional network committed to advancing rural women's leadership in agriculture, encouraging climate-smart farming practices, promoting agribusiness entrepreneurship, strengthening food systems, and supporting national efforts toward agricultural transformation.

The association officially began operations in 2024, holding its inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM), where its constitution, governance structure, strategic objectives, and leadership were formalized. During this formative period, members emphasized that receiving national recognition should not represent the end of a farmer's contribution but rather the beginning of greater national service through mentorship, advocacy, and community development. Since its establishment, GAFAFAW has rapidly emerged as an influential voice for women in agriculture. Under the leadership of its Chairperson, Ernestina Osei-Tutu, the association has consistently advocated for policies that improve women's access to productive resources, particularly agricultural land, affordable credit, mechanization, irrigation, quality inputs, and profitable markets.

One of the association's earliest national advocacy campaigns focused on addressing the longstanding issue of women's access to farmland. GAFAFAW highlighted that in several communities, especially within parts of Northern Ghana and the Volta Region, cultural norms continue to prevent women from owning or controlling agricultural land. According to the association, these customary practices significantly limit women's ability to invest in long-term agricultural production and commercial farming despite their enormous contribution to Ghana's food production. Through media engagements and stakeholder consultations, GAFAFAW called for stronger collaboration among traditional authorities, government institutions, and civil society organizations to address these inequalities. The association also advocates increased investment in female farmers through improved extension services, mechanization support, climate-smart technologies, irrigation infrastructure, improved seeds, financial inclusion, post-harvest management, value addition, and agribusiness development. These advocacy efforts align closely with Ghana's broader agricultural transformation agenda.

A major milestone in the association's development was the celebration of its Second Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Induction Ceremony, held in Accra under the theme:

"Rooted in Experience, Rising in Leadership: Rural Women at the Heart of Agricultural Transformation."

The event attracted senior government officials, development partners, private sector organizations, financial institutions, agribusiness leaders, and award-winning female farmers from across Ghana.

Delivering the keynote address, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, reaffirmed Government's commitment to empowering women farmers through the Feed Ghana Programme implemented under the Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA). The Minister acknowledged the indispensable role women play in ensuring Ghana's food security and commended GAFAFAW for creating a strong national platform that promotes female leadership within the agricultural sector. He further pledged continued collaboration with the association to expand women's access to modern agricultural technologies, extension services, agro-processing opportunities, climate-smart farming, financial services, and improved market access. The AGM also witnessed the induction of newly recognized female award winners into the association, symbolizing the continuous expansion of GAFAFAW's membership and national influence. The ceremony featured exhibitions of agricultural products, value-added food products, agro-processing innovations, livestock enterprises, fisheries products, and agribusiness technologies produced by members from across the country. Development partners including the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), Yara Ghana Limited, and other stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to partnering with GAFAFAW in advancing women-led agricultural enterprises. Beyond advocacy, GAFAFAW seeks to serve as a centre of excellence where experienced female farmers mentor emerging farmers, particularly women and youth entering agriculture. Through knowledge exchange, peer learning, demonstrations of best agricultural practices, and leadership development, the association hopes to preserve institutional knowledge gained through years of practical farming experience while nurturing the next generation of agribusiness leaders.

Today, GAFAFAW continues to position itself as a strategic stakeholder in Ghana's agricultural development. Its members represent some of the country's most accomplished women in crop production, livestock farming, fisheries, agro-processing, climate-smart agriculture, agribusiness, and rural enterprise development. By bringing together award-winning practitioners from diverse agricultural value chains, the association contributes practical insights that inform policy discussions while promoting sustainable agricultural production and inclusive rural development.

Looking ahead, GAFAFAW envisions becoming the foremost national voice for women in agriculture and fisheries, promoting innovation, climate resilience, food security, economic empowerment, and gender-inclusive agricultural transformation. The association aims to deepen partnerships with government agencies, development organizations, research institutions, financial institutions, private sector actors, and international partners to ensure that women farmers receive the recognition, resources, and opportunities needed to contribute fully to Ghana's agricultural and economic development.
